Senator Coons Suggests Amy Coney Barrett Doesn’t Have Her Own Mind, She Fights Back

On day three of the hearings to confirm Amy Coney Barrett to the Supreme Court, Democratic Senator Chris Coons from Delaware had his turn to ask Judge Barrett his questions. One was plain rude at best and insulting at worst.

Years ago, Barrett clerked for the late Justice Antonin Scalia whom she has called her mentor. Scalia was a known conservative and tended to vote that way. Democrats are assuming that because Barrett says that she thinks similarly to him and has the same originalist judicial philosophy that she would vote just as he did. They think that any questions or potential cases surrounding healthcare, gay marriage, abortion, voting, immigration, etc. would be just the same as his. Assuming that she is incapable of creating a thought different from the man who mentored her.

Senator Coons made quite the assumption when he suggested that Barrett would vote just the same as Scalia. He implied that she wouldn’t think independently, despite her affirming several times that she has not made any agreements with anyone on how she would rule on a case, nor would she.

After expressing that disparaging remark, Amy Barrett fired back, “I hope you aren’t suggesting that I don’t have my own mind or that I couldn’t think independently or that I would just decided like ‘let me see what Justice Scalia has said about this in the past.’ I assure you I have my own mind.”

She affirmed that while she may agree with his approach to originalism and textualism, she doesn’t always agree with his application of it. Hearings are hard for anyone to go through, but especially those for a judge, and even more so a potential SCOTUS Justice. We saw in the Kavanaugh hearings that his whole life was put on display and picked apart by those who felt they had the right. Awful claims were made about him and he and his family were put through so much. Democrats have done nearly the same with Judge Barrett. They’ve made outlandish claims, such as this one, about her that are absolutely not true, nor is there any evidence to suggest otherwise.
