Marine General Frank McKenzie announced that by the end of September only 3000 soldiers will remain in Iraq, a 2200 soldier difference from the original 5200. By lessening the number of U.S. soldiers in country this will better allow the U.S. to assist in eliminating what remains of ISIS. McKenzie said, “This decision is due to our confidence in the Iraqi Security Forces’ increased ability to operate independently.” This comes as part of efforts to achieve the goal of an Iraqi security force that is equipped and capable of combating ISIS and Iraq securing sovereignty without foreign aid. Last month, President Trump met with Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi in the Oval Office and told reporters that he looks “forward to the day when we don’t have to be there.”
